"What do the noble scholars say about this issue: If Zayd finds 20 rupees outside the mosque, can he put the money in the mosque’s charity box?
Answer:
If someone finds wealth (luqatah) and its owner is unknown, it is considered a trust (amanah) and the finder is responsible for announcing it to the people, saying, ‘If anyone has lost money, send it to me.’ The finder should also announce it in the mosque. If the owner appears, the finder should return the money to them. If a long time passes and it becomes clear that the owner is not searching for it, the finder has the option to keep it, use it for personal needs if they are poor, or give it as charity. They can also put it in the mosque’s charity box. And Allah knows best.”
Note:
Luqatah refers to lost property or wealth found by someone, and the Islamic law has specific rules regarding its handling and disposal.
